Mates of State

Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel are a married couple who have managed to stay together and form the amazing band Mates of State.

In 2006 Mates of State released the the great album Bring it Back which, miraciously, managed to have one of the creepiest album covers I have seen.

Oh and it also has some of the best harmonies I've ever heard.

Well this summer the duo will be back, after two years of silence, with Crushes (The Covers Mixtape)

Tracklist:
01 Laura (Girls)
02 Son et Lumiere (The Mars Volta)
03 Sleep the Clock Around (Belle and Sebastian)
04 Technicolor Girls (Death Cab for Cutie)
05 Long Way Home (Tom Waits)
06 Love Letter (Nick Cave)
07 Second Hand News (Fleetwood Mac)
08 17 Pink Sugar Elephants (Vashti Bunyan)
09 Roller Coaster Ride (Dear Nora)
10 True Love Will Find You in the End (Daniel Johnston)

Now some of these songs I can understand why the band would choose to cover, such as Death Cab and Girls, but others I just am unsure so to how they will sound, such as Tom Waits. Still I have faith and it will be interesting to see how the Mars Volta will be transformed into indie pop. Below you can download the first track, which from my first impressions is really good (and warranted an immediate replay).

The track is abilible for download with the exchange of your email.

Black Keys

Not sure how I missed this but if you preorder a ticket to one of the Black Key's many show you will received two mp3s. One is Tighten Up, the Danger Mouse produced track, and Next Girl.

The Black Keys will be playing a 21+ show at the Depot on June 2nd.

Fever Ray music video

Karin Elisabeth Dreijer Andersson is the voice behind most of the tracks of Swedish band The Knife, the others feature her brother Olof Dreijer. Personally I've always preferred the tracks where she sang rather than her brother. As a resulte I was ecstatic when I found out she going to be recording a solo album under the name Fever Ray. Karin certainly lived up to my expectations. She stayed true to the Knife's electro sound but also branched out to create her own, more toned down, sound. Fever Ray's self titled release is a great release with lot of really good tracks. Here is the music video for the track If I had a Heart.
